Ike got security.
"If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom."
- Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower
With mobility screaming freedom, clearly, “prison” is not an option for your content. Information security, today, is more complex than ever. Complexity leads to brittleness resulting in less security, not more. Instead of exacerbating the problem by walking you through hundreds of security controls we have in place, like many others, we plan to share with you three specific things we do differently that help you achieve more security. These are in response to the questions that we have heard you ask time and again, in a myriad of ways.
I know my users love Syncplicity but:

Syncplicity "No Silos" Strategy Primer
Rich Mobile Access for Enterprise Content Stores like SharePoint
Syncplicity is being deployed in enterprises at massive scale. When we were first acquired Syncplicity, the user base and average size per account was increasing nicely. With the addition of on premise storage and many new enterprise features throughout 2013, we've seen a major leap in average deployment size. But it’s not just the sheer size of deployments that amazes me—it’s that file syncing and sharing is fundamentally changing the way large teams and organizations work.
Here are some ways...
Access files anytime, on any device.
We depend on more devices than ever, and we need access to files on the go. Sync and share solutions make it easy…but not all of them are easy to use. Syncplicity provides access to files without having to drag-and-drop them to a special folder or upload them to a service. It provides access to the most recent file versions on all devices, with no extra steps.
The most common collaboration system in use today is something wasn’t built for collaboration at all—email. It’s not secure, there’s no version control, and it’s difficult to keep track of documents. The truth is that collaboration is a continuous people-driven process, not a technology. With Syncplicity, sharing files is as easy as posting a picture on Facebook but provides the enterprise-grade security, version tracking, and file backup that people need.
Distribute files to a highly remote workforce.
For departments and project teams, the ability to distribute and update files is essential. For example, EMC uses Syncplicity to distribute presentations, sales training, partner enablement materials, and video assets. Our customers use it to share everything from product information in life sciences to standard operating procedures in manufacturing. Traditional portals aren’t good at file distribution; while it’s easy to post new versions of documents, users rarely keep current by downloading them, especially if they work from multiple computers and devices. Syncplicity streamlines this process and ensures that everyone’s files are up to date.
Send large files securely.
Files are getting larger—video, CAD, and even simple PowerPoints (our keynotes at EMC World were almost 100MB!). Email isn’t meant for sending large files, and FTP sites are complicated. Syncplicity recently added Secure Shared Links so you can send a file of any size from any shared folder with a simple click. You can also track who has downloaded the file and set permissions to ensure that it isn’t forwarded to competitors or other unauthorized users, which is critical for sales contracts, proposals, and other sensitive business information.
Protect your desktop documents and never miss a beat.
Most of us have desktop backup solutions in place but if your computer dies, how fast can you get back to full productivity? Syncplicity keeps files synched in real time, so when one computer goes down you can access your documents on a mobile device or instantly download them to a loaner machine.
The vast majority of business collaboration is free-flowing in nature and we need solutions that facilitate teamwork and enhance productivity. Enterprise-grade sync and share solutions, like Syncplicity, have evolved well beyond consumer-oriented features for sharing files, photos, and songs. They have become the new way we access, share, and collaborate across boundaries and have fundamentally changed the way we work.
Syncplicity joins forces with the industry’s top two federated identity solutions: OneLogin and Ping Identity’s PingFederate to make it easier than ever to bring a secure, easy-to-use file sync and sharing solution to the enterprise. These integrations enable real-time, automated provisioning and de-provisioning of Syncplicity accounts based on centralized Active Directory changes.
Federated Identity Management with Syncplicity
Maintaining the security and trustworthiness of user accounts across an increasing number of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications quickly becomes a headache. Administrators must onboard and off board users across many applications with different consoles and management tools. Federated Identity Management solutions provide a secure infrastructure to do this easily.
With strong relationships with leading enterprise solution providers, Syncplicity delivers unmatched flexibility and control to the enterprise for online file sync and sharing.
Easy Set Up for Cloud-based File Sharing
It’s easy to set up a new or existing Syncplicity account to be integrated with either OneLogin or PingFederate, depending on whether you need a cloud-based or on-premise identity management solution.
Streamlined Account Administration and Security
With the OneLogin or PingFederate integration, changes to Active Directory accounts are automatically applied to Syncplicity accounts in real time without duplication of effort.
wOK, it’s not actually our birthday. But EMC World 2013 is the first anniversary of Syncplicity’s acquisition by EMC. A year ago this week a team from Syncplicity was on a plane to Vegas enroute to their indoctrination into the EMC family, live on stage with IIG President, Rick Devenuti.
It was a whirlwind day, and it hasn’t let up since! But as we forge ahead into 2013 and beyond, it’s fitting to take a moment and reflect on what a difference a year makes!
A Year of Accelerated Innovation
Early on, critics said innovation would be slow. On the contrary, EMC Syncplicity is introducing new features to customers every 4 weeks. Here are just a few highlights:
September: Enhanced Enterprise Grade IT Control with Data Retention Policies, Mobile SSO for iOS, and centralized Folder and Device Management
October: Industry’s First Mobile Push Sync for iOS
November: Syncplicity Connector for Documentum Beta
December: Industry’s First Mobile Push Sync for Android, and Mobile SSO for Android
January: Storage Choice and Control with EMC Isilon and EMC Atmos Storage Beta, and new User, File, Folder, and Device Audit and Usage Reports
February: New Windows 8 Phone and Tablet Apps
March: Syncplicity Enterprise Edition featuring EMC Isilon and EMC Atmos Storage GA, Documentum Connector GA, and Integration into EMC Direct and Channel ordering processes expanding distribution opportunities.
April: New Dynamic Online File Browser and Windows 8 Live Tiles and Semantic Search
Raising the Bar on User Experience
In the tireless pursuit of providing a frictionless experience, we have big plans such as our new Windows 8 Apps.
But we aren’t stopping there. Check out our new Online File Browser. It’s fast. It’s beautiful. And it’s designed for real business use cases. We’ve made it easier for you to share folders with external collaborators and recover files by showing deleted files inline. Bye Bye, trash can!
Latest and Greatest: Hybrid Cloud for Sync and Share
In March we introduced our hybrid cloud, giving customers the ability to choose public cloud or private cloud storage via EMC Isilon and EMC Atmos. This week we announced upcoming support for EMC VNX, giving our customers even more storage choice.
Now, storage is fantastic but what about the content you are storing? After all, not all content is created equal.
We’ve got you covered there too. Enter: EMC Syncplicity Policy-Driven Hybrid Cloud. EMC Synplicity’s solution will allow IT to set policies for users, groups, and folders that determine where files are stored. And if they want them on premise, they stay on premise. Non-sensitive content could go in the public cloud, while other files remain in a specific data center. Large files like videos and CAD design documents could be replicated globally to optimize performance.
Speaking of providing unprecedented choice, we are excited to announce Syncplicity’s integration with EMC ViPR. ViPR’s software-defined storage layer will give us a way to deploy features across numerous storage solutions and deployment models more nimbly making it easier for EMC ViPR customers to configure their storage environment without having to reconfigure EMC Syncplicity.
This has truly been an amazing year and the exciting part is that we are just getting started!
