We're excited to have won CRN’s 2014 Enterprise App Award in the productivity category.
The “Appys” recognize outstanding achievement by developers of enterprise mobile apps, with apps evaluated by CRN’s editors on functionality, suitability to task, ease of use, innovation and potential value to solution providers, their customers and the market in general.
CRN evaluated a number of mobile applications for productivity and recognized Syncplicity as a winner for delivering a powerful enterprise-class file sync and share solution with a completely redesigned iPhone app.
EMC Syncplicity’s iPhone app launched this summer provides enterprise users with a completely re-built mobile application that incorporates a very intuitive, consumer-grade user interface that innovates in three key areas: beauty, efficiency, and power.
With 86% of today’s business leaders believing UX is just as important for enterprise apps as it is for consumer apps, Syncplicity has set the bar on UX for file sharing apps across the enterprise mobile work/collaboration space. For a quick demo of the product’s key features click here.
This week, Syncplicity will be competing against other Appy winners for the Best of Show award at CRNs Tech Tank 2014 by showcasing our key product innovations.
Today we are "launching" a comprehensive Customer Success Program that we believe is first of its kind in this industry. It is a bit of a misnomer to say we are "launching", because we've been doing it for years. Today we are making available a veritable ton of resources to help our customers, large and small, evaluate and deploy EFSS enterprise-wide more easily and become heroes in their organizations.
Consumerization of IT is changing the way employees select apps to help them be more productive. Whether purchased, or used for free, a new breed of applications is making it easier for end users to get started with very low "friction." Of course, this trend doesn't change the requirement for IT professionals to protect corporate assets-- in fact, this makes it harder.
This virtual tug-of-war between end users and IT doesn't need to escalate into an all-out conflagration. In fact, we think it provides one of the best opportunities for IT to become heroes in their organizations. After all, what could be more impressive than safely and securely keeping your users at the cutting edge of technology?
As part of the Syncplicity Customer Success program, we are making a lot of information and assets available to you. These include methodologies for evaluating and deploying EFSS within your IT environment and for driving engagement with employees, a training site dubbed Syncplicity University where users and IT can watch training videos, and a collection of marketing assets you can use internally to drive awareness, adoption, and engagement of Syncplicity.
That said, we thought we would highlight a few key learnings from years of helping drive some of the industry's largest active deployments:
The goal is engagement, not deployment.
In the past, software companies would sell you software licenses and maintenance, and whether your users used it or not was your problem. With SaaS, usage is both of our problems. It's our problem because most likely, you will start small and buy more licenses only when adoption grows. That's the beauty of the new model, because it forces us to always stay on our toes and be constantly innovating (something we love to do!). It's your problem, however, if your employees don't use what you bought-- they will continue to make your organization less secure by adopting consumer-grade tools. Like never before, we are in this together!
Engagement starts with adoption, and adoption starts with awareness.
Gone are the days when all it took to get software usage was to make it available. Employees are bombarded with too many messages, and now we are all sophisticated enough to jump on to the Internet to find solutions when we need them, even if a solution is already pre-installed on a device! To combat this, the new world needs to meet the old world. Our customers are driving massive initial awareness internally through a combination of digital and physical marketing. That's right... Marketing. That's why we work with our customers to develop compelling content that they can send to their end users to drive awareness, but also help them with physical media like posters, and even help with best practices for launch parties! Simply put, you have to keep driving the word out and we are here to help.
Engagement is driven by emotion.
We've all heard the of the notion that end users will decide if they love an app within the first 30 seconds of using it (that's why we designed our apps so they'll love them at first swipe! But even then, users won't try an app unless there's something in it for them. That's why we think it is important to help them understand exactly how a solution will change the way they work with contextually relevant use cases. To help you do that, we've designed a catalog of assets for our customers to use internally to help create that "a ha" moment by highlighting use cases and features that emotionally connect with users-- directly hitting on some really painful day-to-day tasks that simply vanish the moment they adopt Syncplicity.
Don’t let its small size fool you. Your iPhone holds a whole world of unlimited productivity inside. If you use Syncplicity for iPhone, you know some of what we mean.
You know we mean anytime, anywhere access to reports, briefs, calendars, meeting notes, presentations, videos, and files of all sizes. You know we mean editing, syncing, and sharing, wherever and whenever, all from your iPhone.
But we’d like to introduce you to more. The NEW Syncplicity app unleashes even more iPhone productivity.
We’d go on and on, but our new iPhone app is not just about new, added features. It’s about reimagining the possibilities with an entirely new iPhone experience. One that provides you with productivity, unbound.
Watch our 52-second “Productivity Unbound” video.
We’ll tell you right now. The second you open Syncplicity’s new iPhone app, it’s going to be love at first swipe.
Our secure, enterprise file sync and share solution has always featured a consumer-grade UX users love. That’s why Gartner referred to our “modern UI” and “enhanced user experience” in naming us 2014 Magic Quadrant leaders. But our new iPhone app sets the UX bar even higher. Way, way higher.
In building this app, we set out to innovate in three key areas: beauty, efficiency, and power.
Beauty: The app is visually stunning and personalized from the very first time you use it.
Efficiency: We have designed innovative ways to navigate vast amounts of information and access features with the simple swipe of the thumb.
Power: We have packed an enormous amount of functionality into a very small device without making it complicated.
Through radical design innovation, we’ve created a fresh, elegant interface that’s as attractive and easy to use as it is powerful. New globally recognized avatars help orient the user throughout the app, and a three-panel main screen view brings unprecedented function and form to the iPhone’s limited real estate.
Bet you already want to meet our new app. No problem. We’ve set it all up.

The next big boost in business productivity is near at hand, and it won’t come from people working harder or longer. “Knowledge workers” will become more productive, as our tools gain greater ability to serve up information without our having to ask for it.
So predicts Gigaom’s Stowe Boyd—the self-described web anthropologist, futurist, and analyst who coined the term “hashtag.”
In his report Context is king: accelerating productivity through context, Boyd says today’s knowledge workers spend 38% of their time searching for information. As our tools gain the ability to do this searching for us, we’ll gain more time for thinking, creating, and experimenting—in other words, more time being productive.
Context is the key to productivity
Advancements in productivity will be based on our technology’s ability to recognize and leverage “context,” says Boyd.
Say, for example, you’re using your smartphone sync-and-share app to share Document X with a colleague. A context-sensitive tool will be able to recognize this scenario and automatically suggest you send related Documents Y and Z.
We’re already leveraging context
As Boyd’s report points out, Syncplicity is already doing this. We use “predictive analytics” to recognize context, and gather and present relevant information to the user.
In the context of a meeting, for example, Syncplicity Meeting Insight™ will automatically prompt the organizer with quick and easy ways to share relevant documents with attendees, eliminating the need to search for them or spend time typing email addresses.
Get ready. Get Syncplicity.
To position their organizations for the next big boost in productivity, Boyd argues that IT leaders should integrate secure, high-performance file sync-and-share technologies that straddle desktop and mobile platforms. “Work is increasingly reliant on this…computing architecture,” he writes, “it forms the basis of…the network of people and information that we rely on to get work done.”

It’s official—in its analysis of 19 different Enterprise File Synchronization and Sharing (EFSS) solutions, Gartner positioned Syncplicity as a leader in its esteemed Magic Quadrant! How’d we get there? We think it was with a little magic…and a vision—our vision for reinventing file sharing and mobile collaboration for the enterprise.
As we see it, users are going to adopt your software only if it has a great UX. Without it, they’ll ditch your EFSS and fall back on consumer-grade file sharing software, which lacks important security features.
In addition to Syncplicity’s enterprise-grade security capabilities we’ve also created a consumer-grade UX that users love.
“Completeness of vision” is one of the two criteria Gartner uses to graphically assess market competitors. For our completeness of vision, we were placed furthest on the axis. We were also second furthest for “ability to execute.”
An enterprise-grade solution that gives IT the control they need, and a UX that users love. Now that’s magic.

At Syncplicity, we use our sync and share software day in and day out—so much so that it’s become an indispensable part of our lives. Of course, we think it’s the best thing since sliced bread, but honestly, our opinion doesn’t matter all that much. It’s what our customers think that’s important. That’s why we like to check in with them once in a while to get a better understanding of what’s working for them and what we could be doing better.
In April, we asked customers for their feedback and here’s what they told us:
Syncplicity is a secure alternative to Dropbox.
78% of customers who chose Syncplicity were seeking a more secure solution than Dropbox.
Don’t get us wrong; Dropbox is a great application for consumers, but not the enterprise. Corporate IT infrastructures and storage systems require heavy duty security to protect valuable data. As an EMC company, Syncplicity was designed to meet the security needs of businesses in the most demanding industries, like finance and healthcare. At the same time, we offer the choice of on-premises, cloud, or hybrid storage, which sets us apart from all the other sync and share tools out there. Source: TechValidate. TVID: 62E-830-8AE
It's better than FTP.
29% of Syncplicity customers use our software as an FTP replacement.
FTP solutions are difficult to use and costly to support. That’s why our customers are choosing Syncplicity. Not only do we make it easy for users to collaborate securely regardless of file size, nearly one-third of customers who took the survey reported that our sync and share solution significantly reduces costs and boosts ROI. It’s increasing productivity anywhere, anytime.
“Syncplicity is the only reliable file-sharing solution for a distributed workforce, and does not require any additional infrastructure.” Vice President, Technology Company
Syncplicity is an innovative, easy-to-use, powerful application that’s constantly exceeding the expectations of today’s mobile workforce. Our recent Go Lite campaign put our apps to the test and proved that smartphones and tablets can do everything a laptop or desktop can do, all while increasing productivity. Source: TechValidate. It provides real-time backup and continuous availability to files.
46% of customers surveyed reported that real-time backup is critical and nearly half chose Syncplicity to meet this need.
Real-time syncing and sharing has the added benefit of being a backup solution that provides continuous availability to documents from any device or computer. Syncplicity protects against hardware failure and automatically versions documents to safeguard against unintentional file overwrites and other human errors. When disaster strikes, your users will still have access to their documents. Source: TechValidate. TVID: 55B-3A6-6BA
What else did we learn?
Customers love the security that Syncplicity provides.

As we collected feedback on Syncplicity, there’s one thing that became clear: we can never stop innovating. We’ve broken new ground with mobile apps that provide an incredible UX and unique functionality, but those innovations will quickly become the new norm—the baseline by which our next generation of apps is measured. Our customers have made it clear that as file sync and share plays an increasingly important role in how they work, their expectations will rise. It’s our challenge and responsibility to consistently exceed them.
Our survey gave us some pretty good insights into how customers are using Syncplicity and what they value most about it. But we don’t want the conversation to end here. Tell us what you think -- take the survey or email us.

Ah, June. With its promise of summer…and summer vacation. No more pencils, no more books. You remember the feeling. It was freedom. Maybe you pedaled away on your bike. Off to a friend’s house. Or a ride through the neighborhood, to a nearby playground or the corner store. Maybe to catch up with the ice cream truck.
But now that we’re grownups, we’re no longer sprung for months of freedom. Or are we?
Syncplicity mobile applications (and our Go Lite challenge) are all about freedom…an endless-summer sort of freedom from laptops and desktops. No more pencils, no more books.
With our intuitive mobile apps (including our new iPhone app which will be unveiled shortly) your users can sync and share files from their smartphones and tablets—whether they’re editing a Word doc or presenting a PowerPoint—all while they’re out and about the neighborhood. But freedom wouldn’t be freedom if the neighborhood wasn’t secure.
With Syncplicity, document sharing and even mobile collaboration is locked-down with enterprise grade security. Whether users are sending documents or reports to colleagues across the neighborhood or across the country, they’re as secure as you felt peddling your Schwinn down to the ball field.
If you’re not already using our mobile apps, what are you waiting for? School’s out—and not just for summer and fall. With Syncplicity, you don’t ever have to go back.
Bob Dylan sang it loud and clear in 1964—the times they are a-changin’. Well…the times did change. And they still are changing, profoundly. IDC’s new Technology Spotlight report, Redefining Enterprise Mobile Collaboration, says the combination of cloud computing and mobility is fundamentally changing the way we work. It defines the trends and technologies that are reshaping enterprise collaboration, and highlights the role EMC is playing!
According to IDC, the most important new cloud-based productivity service is enterprise file sync and share. Why? Because consumer-grade solutions have gone viral, and they pose a threat to the integrity and security of enterprise data. These solutions were designed for casual file sharing by consumers and they lack the ability to address the security, privacy, governance, and compliance needs of the enterprise.
But don’t take our word for it. Download the report for free and see what IDC says about Redefining Enterprise Mobile Collaboration:

Now that the dust has settled on EMC World 2014, we’ve had a chance to reflect on the whirlwind event. It was four fun-filled days of sharing knowledge and showing the world some of the ways Syncplicity is reinventing mobility:
Go Lite—turn smartphones and tablets into primary productivity devices
No Silos—provide access to enterprise-wide content from a single mobile app
Storage Choice—store data where you want…on-premises, in the cloud, or a hybrid of both
But we knew all of that before EMC World. So here are a few things that surprised us...
First, we asked our engineers to turn the iPad into a more productive tool than the laptop. Then, we challenged them to do the same with the iPhone…but to make it even better. At EMC World, we gave folks a sneak peek at the new Syncplicity iPhone app, and it stole the show! The pleasant surprise was the near universal endorsement of our work by a discerning and demanding audience. Small is, in fact, the new big. Jaws dropped, and oohs and aahs abounded as our General Manager, Jeetu Patel, showed key features of the app live from Area 53. From traversing complex directory structures to seamless sharing and information filtering, the demo showed how breakthrough UX innovation has the power to transform small form factor devices into indispensable productivity boosters.

It was standing room only for our mobile app demos and sessions. Step aside Celine Dion, it was almost like we had our own Vegas show! Storage techies flooded the venue for anything with the word “mobile” in it.
Do you agree? Tweet this ... Storage techies love mobile @syncplicity #EMCWORLD http://bit.ly/1myWzew
Preparing for a 10-minute demo is a lot more work than it appears. From the sandbox environment to hardware, content, and scripting, there are a lot of moving parts. In the end, all the hard work and rehearsing paid off, and Jeetu’s Area 53 keynote went off without a hitch. But there are always things you can’t predict, like the spontaneous live tweets and texts that came in during the event, which made the demo come alive.
Do you agree? Tweet this ... Spontaneous live tweets at #EMCWORLD Area 53 made sneak peek of @syncplicity iPhone app even more thrilling! http://bit.ly/1myWzew
Forget stress balls! We handed out hydration packs to the first 300 attendees who completed the passport. Within 20 minutes, we’d given out more than 100 packs! People were thirsty at our booth…maybe it was all the rock climbing.
Do you agree? Tweet this ... Hydration packs rock @syncplicity #EMCWORLD http://bit.ly/1myWzew
So, we had a rock-climbing wall (doesn’t everyone?) and skepticism loomed around audience participation. Would people actually dare to tackle it? Thankfully, our fears were unfounded. Suit, tie, dress shoes? No matter. Climbing a wall was second nature to our executive team and EMC World attendees.
Do you agree? Tweet this ...Men in suits can climb walls @Syncplicity redefining sports attire. #EMCWORLD! http://bit.ly/1myWzew
